The Red Hook Community Justice Center is a courthouse that combines legal action with social services for an approach that emphasizes rehabilitation over retribution.
Endorsed by representatives of the traditional justice system, such as former DA Charles Hynes and former Chief Judge Judith Kaye, the Center operates within the greater Brooklyn courts system but acts of its own accord. A team of defense attorneys, social workers, and program coordinators work on site, so that the Center’s many programs are self-sufficient. These programs address the social issues underlying the cases that come the court in all three of its jurisdictions – housing court, family court, and criminal court.
Alex Calabrese is the sole Judge presiding at the Red Hook Court. A committed advocate of community justice, he is a non-traditional Judge with no interest in staying behind the bench.
